Updated October 21, 2026. SALT details were checked on SALT Software's own website on October 20, 2026. EASI details come from easi-as.com, the Northern Speech Services listing and iTherapy.
This page is a quick reference for SLPs comparing EASI and SALT. They are two different kinds of software. SALT is dedicated language sample analysis software with reference databases. EASI is a caseload workspace that covers the range of SLP work, and language sample analysis is one part of it.
The short answer
Choose SALT if your main need is comparing a language sample against reference databases of typical speakers, using SALT's coding conventions and reports.
Choose EASI if you want one place for caseload management, plus scheduling (in beta), evaluation reports (in beta), IEP goal drafts, notes, progress reports, therapy plans, materials and AAC supports, with every transcript line reviewed and attested by you before a sample is scored.
Use both if you rely on SALT's databases and also want help with the work around them.
What EASI covers
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Caseload management, plus scheduling (in beta) | Keep your caseload in one place. Scheduling is in beta. |
| Evaluation reports (in beta) | The report generator fills your uploaded clinic or district template with a draft evaluation report that you edit, approve and sign. It is in beta. |
| Measurable SMART IEP goals | EASI drafts measurable SMART IEP goals from the full evaluation for you to review, edit and approve. |
| SOAP and therapy notes | Keep SOAP notes and therapy notes with the rest of the case. |
| Progress reports | Create progress reports for the date range you choose. |
| MySLP (included with EASI) | Lesson and session plans, data sheets, printable talking core boards, the SETT framework for AAC, home programs and therapy images. |
| Therapy materials and therapy camera | Therapy materials, plus a therapy camera with pictures and filters that help prompt language for a language sample. |
| Lightspeed Literacy | Orton Gillingham informed literacy support. |
| Talking core boards | Talking core boards in English and Spanish. |
| Bilingual cases | Client profiles record language exposure, so English scores can be interpreted in light of the other languages a child uses. MySLP can transcribe Spanish and translate a report into Spanish for families. |
| Language sample analysis | Samples are scored only after you review and attest each transcript line. |
You stay in charge of every clinical decision. EASI doesn't decide diagnosis or eligibility, and you review, edit and approve everything EASI drafts. EASI is HIPAA and FERPA compliant, with a BAA and insurance.

How SALT works
| Step | What happens in SALT |
|---|---|
| 1. Choose a sample type | SALT can analyze any language sample. To compare with a database, pick a sample type that matches one of SALT's databases. |
| 2. Review the protocol | Review the sampling protocol and gather the right elicitation materials. |
| 3. Collect and record | Collect and record the sample. |
| 4. Transcribe | Transcribe word for word in SALT's editor using SALT's coding conventions, or use SALT's transcription service. |
| 5. Analyze and interpret | Compare results with matched speakers (age, grade, gender, sampling context and transcript length), then run the Performance Report and other reports. |
How EASI handles a language sample
| Step | What happens in EASI |
|---|---|
| 1. Draft | Record in EASI, upload audio, or bring in a transcript. Automatic transcription is a draft, not clinical evidence. |
| 2. Review | Correct words, speaker labels, morphemes and IPA details while you can still see the source. |
| 3. Attest | Confirm each line. If something looks wrong, fix it before you attest it. |
| 4. Score and draft | EASI calculates the measures your sample supports, then the report generator (in beta) fills your template with a draft you edit, approve and sign. |

Questions SLPs ask
Is EASI a replacement for SALT?
Not exactly. SALT is dedicated language sample analysis software with reference databases for comparing a speaker with typical peers. EASI covers a broader range of caseload work, with clinician reviewed language sample analysis as one part. The right choice depends on your setting, your analysis needs and the comparison data you rely on.
Can EASI help with IEP goals?
Yes. SALT suggests goals from the sample; EASI drafts SMART IEP goals from the full evaluation for your review. You edit and approve every goal, and clinical judgment and eligibility stay with you.
Does EASI score the automatic transcript?
No. EASI calculates transcript based measures only after you review and attest each line.
Does EASI have reference databases like SALT?
No. EASI doesn't include a SALT style reference database. You decide which norms apply. If database comparison is central to your evaluations, SALT is designed for that.
How does EASI help with bilingual cases?
Client profiles record language exposure, so English scores can be interpreted in light of the other languages a child uses. MySLP can transcribe Spanish and translate a report into Spanish for families, and talking core boards are available in English and Spanish.
Is EASI HIPAA and FERPA compliant?
Yes. EASI is HIPAA and FERPA compliant, with a BAA and insurance.
How can a school district or clinic buy EASI?
EASI group plans for 10 or more are sold through Northern Speech Services, EASI's distributor. Email info@northernspeech.com for group pricing.
Can I use EASI and SALT together?
Yes. Some SLPs may want SALT for reference database comparison and EASI for the reports, goals, plans, materials and AAC supports around the rest of the caseload.
