How much talk is enough? In this short Ask MySLP video, we share what the research says. An article in ASHA's journal for school clinicians suggests at least 50 utterances in most cases, and closer to 100 for detailed grammar. For three year olds, seven to ten minutes gave reliable results, while one minute samples can mislead because many children are still warming up. Play brings more talk, stories bring longer sentences, and open ended questions keep children talking. In EASI, you can record live with built in interactive backgrounds and pictures, then review and attest the transcript before you see MLU, number of different words, vocabulary diversity, the Index of Productive Syntax, percent consonants correct, and intelligibility and phonological information.
